Comparison of the requirements of GISTM and IRMA standards in relation to tailing storage facilities

Client: Large mining and metals company
Location: Russia

Project: Comparison of the requirements of GISTM and IRMA standards in relation to tailing storage facilities
Purpose: to conduct a comparative analysis of the requirements of the IRMA (Initiative for Responsible Mining) Standard dated June 2018 and the Final draft of the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management (GISTM) dated August 5, 2020.
Approach:
Within the framework of the Project, a comparative analysis of the IRMA and GISTM standards requirements was carried out. During the work, it was taken into account that the GISTM Standard contains requirements directly related to the tailings storage facilities (TSF) management, while the IRMA Mining standard contains general requirements for mining enterprises and tailings facilities in this standard are considered as one of the mine waste facilities.

Result:
A comparison of the two Standards was carried out. It was determined which requirements correspond fully, partially, or are absent from one or another standard at all. It was also determined which of the two standards has the most detailed and strict requirements.
